Take FlightTAKE FLIGHT © Gary Nebel

I've always been intrigued at how large flocks of birds can act in perfect unison as they careen across the sky. If you look closely, every bird's eye is on the same plane as these Sanderlings lift from a lagoon at Ding Darling NWR on Sanibel Island, FL.

Golden Sunrise GOLDEN SUNRISE © Patricia Nebel

I took this photo at one of my favorite spots, Babcock-Webb WMA. The air smelled sweet and dewy and the sun had just come up, casting a golden mist through the pine flatwoods. It lasted for only a few minutes, but what a spectacular sight.

AWARD: Honorable Mention

We usually explore South Lido Park by kayak, but on this day we were on land when I spotted a solitary Egret tucked away in a corner of one of the lagoons. The reflection in the dark water caught my eye and reminded me of a ballerina pose.

High above me, this bright male Cardinal enjoys a great buffet of ripe Gumbo Limo berries.

You may be familiar with the Koi Pond at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. It's a wonderfully peaceful spot. The photo in black and white captured the moment.
